In late 2025 Fivetran and dbt Labs signed an agreement to merge. Shortly after, Fivetran implemented another pricing change.

What’s quickly emerging, however, is that pricing is but one axis that consumers care about. In this guide, we’ll cover some other ideas about where we think ELT and Data Ingestion vendors can start to differentiate in 2026.

We’ll say these should be:

• Breadth: the extent of coverage a particular player provides. Greater breadth provides greater ease-of-use and consistency.

• Reliability or Depth: there is no point sacrificing breadth for depth; fundamentally ELT tools are designed to save us time, and constant support or breakages largely defeat the point of the purchase

• Support: onboarding and support is critical for companies in 2026

• Price and certainty: one element of solutions and tooling will always be price, but certainty can also provide leaders with clarity and time-savings, especially around budgeting season

There will be some additional criteria we arbitrarily select for slightly different services.

• Security and Deployment Options: almost a standalone feature for difficult hybrid or on-premise deployments

• CDC Support: a niche but fairly adjacent part of ELT that comes of increasing importance due to its ability to efficiently and incrementally load data from common high-volume database sources

We’ll focus on two leading players in the space; Fivetran and Airbyte.

Fivetran’s pricing is usage-based, centered on Monthly Active Rows (MAR) — meaning you pay for the number of unique rows synced each month. In 2025, Fivetran shifted MAR billing from account-wide to per-connector, eliminating bulk discounts and often increasing costs for multi-source environments.

Standard plans typically run around $500 per million MAR, with Enterprise tiers ranging roughly $800–$1,200 per million MAR and a free tier up to 500,000 MAR. This model can make budgeting unpredictable because costs scale directly with data change volume and connector count. polytomic.com+1

Airbyte’s pricing is fundamentally different. Its open-source version is free if self-hosted, meaning software cost can be zero though you incur infrastructure and maintenance overhead.

For Airbyte Cloud and paid plans, pricing has transitioned to capacity-based billing using “Data Workers”, charging for processing capacity rather than data volume — which can lead to more predictable spend and avoid a “data tax” as volumes grow. Paid tiers start with per-credit pricing (e.g., ~$2.50 per credit), with Enterprise custom plans available — see pricing.

Fundamentally — the Airbyte pricing model mirrors what we’d do as engineers. Data volumes are by nature, not that spiky. It is not ideal that capacity is fixed since it means you are essentially always paying for an cluster that’s “always on” but at least you have predictability.

While Airbyte have also changed their pricing (the capacity) recently in 2025, it pales in comparisons to the anecdotes and frequency of pricing changes posed by Fivetran — some customers report having to re-evaluate pricing 3 months into a newly-signed contract.

Airbyte is the clear winner here.

Category 5: Airbyte and Fivetran deployment

Across cloud, hybrid/private cloud, and on-prem environments, Fivetran and Airbyte take fundamentally different architectural approaches.

1. Cloud Deployment

• Fivetran operates as a fully managed cloud SaaS, with customers running connectors inside Fivetran’s infrastructure. Security controls include SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, GDPR compliance, and encryption in transit/at rest. Cloud choice is abstracted away — users cannot choose which public cloud Fivetran runs on, and have limited influence over regional control beyond what is provided.

• Airbyte Cloud also provides a managed service, but customers can select regions and maintain more visibility into connector behavior. Compliance and security controls align with standard cloud practices, and because Airbyte is open source, organizations can audit underlying code if required.

2. Hybrid / Private Cloud

• Fivetran Hybrid Deployment allows data processing to occur within the customer’s VPC while control-plane operations remain in Fivetran’s cloud. This is suitable for organizations requiring data locality but not full infrastructure ownership.

• Airbyte Enterprise (Hybrid) supports a more modular architecture: the control plane can run in Airbyte Cloud while data planes run inside a customer VPC, private cloud, or isolated environment. This model supports high-sensitivity use cases where teams must ensure data never leaves their controlled perimeter.

3. On-Prem Deployment

• Fivetran does not support full on-prem deployments. All operations require Fivetran’s control plane and managed environment, with Hybrid providing the closest approximation but still not removing cloud dependency. — that said there is the legacy HVR Product and the newer on-premise runner deployment. This is in beta as at Dec 2025 and not well documented, but at Orchestra a lot of manufacturing clients leverage this approach.

• Airbyte supports full on-premise deployment, including air-gapped environments. Organizations can self-host entirely within their own infrastructure, aligning with industries that require strict offline or regulated environments (finance, defense, healthcare). The OS angle has clear advantages here

Cloud Provider Flexibility

• Fivetran: limited; users cannot choose the underlying cloud provider and must accept Fivetran’s managed environment. That said, it works more or less equally across clouds but Azure is a bit more painful

• Airbyte: flexible; self-hosted versions can run on AWS, GCP, Azure, private OpenStack, Kubernetes clusters, or bare-metal servers. Again — the OS component provides a clear advantage.

I would say Airbyte offers a lot more flexibility here as well.

Category 6: CDC with Airbyte and Fivetran

I’ve decided to include Change Data Capture (“CDC”) here because it’s a very popular approach to moving data that’s got its own quirks and can be important when evaluating tools.

Fivetran delivers CDC as a fully managed service, using log-based replication for major databases like Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, and MongoDB. Reliability is generally high because Fivetran maintains all CDC connectors, handles schema changes automatically, and provides built-in retries and monitoring.

Operational effort is minimal, but you must run CDC inside Fivetran’s cloud or hybrid environment — no full on-prem option. Pricing is tied to Monthly Active Rows (MAR), so CDC workloads can become expensive as update volume scales.

Airbyte supports CDC through a mix of official and community connectors, with flexibility to run CDC in cloud, private cloud, or fully on-prem environments. This makes Airbyte preferable for teams requiring data locality, regulatory control, or custom CDC logic.

Reliability varies more because not all CDC connectors are equally mature, and self-hosted deployments require active monitoring and operational ownership. Airbyte Cloud uses capacity-based pricing, which can be more predictable for high-frequency CDC.

That said — there is a huge internal effort from the team to improve the on-premise and CDC-related connectivity at the moment. For Airbyte Cloud in particular, in the vein of supporting more real-time use-cases, newer Airbyte paid customers leverage this pattern a lot.

I believe Airbyte also offer a Hybrid option where the Airbyte clusters are managed in the customer’s environment by Airbyte, which seems to be gaining a lot of traction.

Summary: we’re going to go with Airbyte here due to the increased focus on CDC and its strong overlap with on-premise/hybrid use-cases, as well as the clear advantage of having a capacity rather than a MAR based pricing model.

The key theme here is reliability and pricing. Fundamentally Fivetran is incredibly reliable if a little expensive and difficult to control with pricing changes seemingly once every 6 months.

Airbyte may require more hand-holding at times, and the community and OS angle represents both benefits and costs depending on deployment preferences and connectors.

Fundamentally, both are reliable, battle-tested solutions at scale and it’s good that in 2026 the gap between them is closing.
